Disney's college program is for US residents only. In the golden age, Hollywood was a global industry. Now, the American media is incredibly protectionist. This makes it easier for US students to get an internship, but it means that American media is less likely to show a European point of view or have a clue as to what is going on outside of the Anglosphere. We are being fed neocon and neolib American values on social media, and on all other fronts.https://lnkd.in/dEMBC-es

"All good ideas start out as bad ideas that's why it takes so long" - Steven SpielbergMost people don’t know this, but Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school three times. But he didn’t let those rejections stop him, and he kept applying till he got accepted.Eventually Cal State, Long Beach would accept him into their film program. Fortunately for Spielberg, he would then go on to leverage his opportunity at Cal State to land an unpaid internship at Universal Studios. Of course, this internship wouldn’t last forever, but it lasted just long enough for him to learn how sneak in to the studios undetected so he could continually gather intel on what it would take to become successful in the business. Finally, the day would come that he managed to get a film he created in the hands of film executives. But, he had to first overcome the film executives multiple attempts to make him give up.After being told that the film size was not the right size multiple times, and remaking the entire demo to the recommended sizes every time, the executives finally relented and gave him his film a shot. The movie would go on to win major awards, and solidified Steven Spielberg’s place within the industry.Steven Spielberg is now one of the most influential film makers in history.A person who tries has an advantage over the person who wishesNote: sharing some good reads here#keeplearning #keeptrying

I've had the chance to work with some incredible female founders...And now I get to work under the guidance of Laura Davies and Sarah Andrews as a content strategy intern for Mumie! One thing I've learned from working in marketing is that I need to be invested in the company's mission and values.Which is exactly what I saw in Mumie.✨It's an app for new mums to help them navigate their postnatal journey.✨It serves to inform and empower mums in their recovery.✨It is a community for mums so that they feel seen, heard, and never alone.✨It provides the right help and support for early postnatal women and for women up to 2 years into their journey.✨It resonates with the challenges, emotions, and experiences that postnatal women deal with. And why do I feel so invested in this mission?I'm not a mother myself, but my mother had to go through all of this and I have friends who have been through childbirth. Plus, the facts are startling:➡️More than 1/3 of women experience lasting health problems after birth (Lancet 2023).➡️Between 2019-2021 over 300 women died within 12 months after pregnancy (MBBRACE 2023).➡️Postnatal support focuses on the health and wellbeing of the baby, often excluding the mother (DHSC 2022).Internships are all about learning new skill sets, but it's also about opening yourself up to others' experiences. I know so many female founders who also juggle being a mother and this is my opportunity to be able to truly understand and empathise with their stories. #newinternship #femalefounders #motherhood

I love this! Jack Rutstein, one of our senior Management Fellows, was featured in The Wall Street Journal. In the immortal words of Calvin Coolidge (one of my favorite presidents): “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”―Calvin CoolidgeJack Rutstein embodies this characteristic. Such grit and determination are the lifeblood of success and the central focus of our business program at DePauw University, e.g., Jon Phillips will touch on this topic this Thursday in our capstone course - see you there, Jack! Resiliency is all too rare. Too few accept the challenge of forging their own path. Jack, I am proud of you and your resiliency. I can't wait to see you blaze your path. #depauw #resilience #persistence

Heard the one about the 99-year-old Hispanic intern?**KINGDOM - PLANET OF THE APES**Sitting here at the Saban Theater about to watch yet another remake of “Planet of the Apes”, I realize that in Hollywood, if you're Hispanic, your best shot is landing an internship. Getting hired as an experienced homegrown professional? Well, good luck with that. It's clear they're emphasizing diversity DEI in the most condescending way possible, but behind the scenes, it's all just smoke and mirrors. And with respect to this “Planet of the Apes” sequel, you could see the weariness of fellow TV Academy members. The theater was less than one-quarter full. The AI was well done, but somehow you couldn’t relate to the story. It brought much more humanity to the apes than to the humans. If there had been a casting call for apes, it would have been more inclusive than for Hispanics. As the credits rolled, not a single Hispanic name was listed in the entire production. These people are the height of hypocrisy—all their talk about diverse interns while slamming doors shut to real competition and making sure Hispanics are kept out of the industry at large, especially behind the cameras. Seems like we already know how this story will unfold. #CAA #Netflix #20thCenturyFox #wga #ucla #emmys #tvacademy #oscars

IntroducingCharles Abbottwho is one of the first young Film and TV Industry professionals to become a part of the#ScreenManchester #ConnectedApprenticescheme.Along with#Screen Alliance NorthandBritish Film Institute (BFI) with the support of #NationalLotteryfunding we are delighted to be opening doors to future high end production in The North staffed by the best talent on offer.Charles' story serves as an inspiration to anyone out there who harbours ambitions to work in Film and Television but who may consider this an impossible dream! On closer inspection there are so many opportunities to become a part of this world and Charles is proof that hard work and focus can and will succeed in helping today's hopefuls get where they need to be, transforming their career dreams into day to day reality! So - how did it happen for Charles? From an early age he was fascinated by film and theatre which in turn led to his studying Creative Writing to A Level. This has shaped his career trajectory into the present. Having lived in Manchester since 2014 Charles began working in events in and around the city whilst simultaneously developing personal projects for film and theatre. He didn't lose sight of his original plan!In 2021, a script he worked on was picked up for funding and development by the BFI which led to a series of freelance projects working alongside a range of industry professionals from the likes of Netflix and Film4.Bills need to be paid of course and all the time Charles was putting energy into his creative ambitions he worked other jobs including as a personal assistant for fashion retailer Oi Polloi, a role he eventually left to pursue his hopes of a full time career in the Film and TV industry. This brave jump into the unknown led to Charles being selected by Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s apprenticeship scheme – Power Up Agency – which resulted in his securing a production assistant role with the film office for Manchester.Working for Screen Manchester since June 2023, Charles has assisted in the locations, crewing and trainee departments of the company. And this is only the start. He has played an important role as part of the mega machine made up of skilled professionals that creates TV hits including Boiling Point and The Bay.And this is only the start.Apprenticeships like Charles' open the doors to the rarified world of production. The portfolio of skills and knowledge he and future apprentices are exposed to will help shape the journey each chooses to take towards rewarding future careers. Not only that, the more apprentices who rise to the change the more successful and secure the Film and TV industry in The North will be!
